Pacific Rim 2 se va al limbo

Varios sitios de noticias la dan por cancelada, pero también tenemos el artículo de Screen Rant:

Guillermo del Toro is a busy man. After having helmed the recently-released Crimson Peak, the director wasted little time in starting to line up his follow-up project. He is now in talks to direct a remake of The Fantastic Voyage, a 1966 sci-film about a submarine crew who are shrunk down to microscopic size to travel inside an injured scientist and repair his brain damage (without the benefit of Dennis Quaid).

Fans of del Toro’s giant monster movie Pacific Rim will undoubtedly take note of one particular detail about The Fantastic Voyage, though: it is not Pacific Rim 2. The director and studio have had an on-again, off-again relationship with the movie, and now it appears it is off again, and even more off again than before.

This news comes via THR, in the same article that broke the news about The Fantastic Voyage. According to the article:

“Del Toro was to have followed up Crimson Peak with Pacific Rim 2, a sequel to his Legendary Pictures mechas-versus-monsters 2013 pic. However, that project was taken off the release schedule, initially for more development. But sources now say the sequel is off the table indefinitely, leaving del Toro wide open to choose his next project.”

Luckily for Pacific Rim fans, this does not signal the death of the series entirely. It will still live on in comic form in Pacific Rim: Tales from the Drift, a follow-up to the previously released prequel Pacific Rim: Tales from Year Zero. In addition, Pacific Rim 2 might still be thrown a lifeline by the unstoppable march of globalization. According to THR:

“Another factor that could impact Pacific Rim 2 plans is the imminent acquisition of Legendary by Wanda, the Chinese conglomerate. Pacific Rim did more business in China than anywhere else in the world, including the U.S., and it could spur on the development of the follow-up.”

In other words, the fact that Pacific Rim performed much better in China than the U.S. and the sequel’s fate is soon to be in the hands of a company that might better appreciate its appeal means that we may yet see another chapter in the saga of its tumultuous journey to the big screen. That’s all conjecture, though, and the more del Toro involves himself in other projects, the less likely his return to the world of giant, kaiju-fighting robots seems.

Screen Rant will keep you updated on any further news regarding Pacific Rim 2‘s fate.
